Seafood Business Accelerator Program Begins in Port Alberni

Applications are now closed for the Fall 2024 Seafood Business Accelerator (SBA) program, but this year’s applicants are just gearing up for four months of training to enhance their seafood businesses!

For the fall cohort, 22 trainees (including 10 from CNF Stakeholder Nations) will represent First Nations from across the coast—Klahoose, Ahousaht, Laxkw'alaams, Haida, Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk), Tla'amin, Tla-o-qui-att, Gitxaala, Metlakatla, Nisga, Nuu chah nulth, and Gwa-sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations. All those involved will be working hard to achieve their goals related to food sovereignty and food security.

The Fall SBA program begins in October with an in-person workshop and tour of an example of shared processing space in Port Alberni (the Dock +).

Over the next four months, trainees will work with business coaches and mentors to create a roadmap for building competitive, sustainable and prosperous businesses. They will attend workshops, both in-person and virtually, and present their plans to key industry players at the final showcase in February 2025.

The goal of SBA’s Fall 2024 program is to strengthen Indigenous-owned seafood businesses and create opportunities for community members to grow within the industry. It will be particularly helpful for small-scale, early-stage seafood entrepreneurs, as they build more sustainable and profitable businesses.

Thank you to all those who applied and good luck to all trainees!
